The existence of God, the knowledge of God, the Attributes of God, and the Trinity cover the basics of what the Church in the past has understood to be true about God. Before I move on from these topics, I wanted to share some thoughts on what we need to do with this information while we are making disciples (which I hope some of you who visit this website are concerned about).

The Second Task of the Teacher involves helping new believers understand what we believe about the existence and character of God. This including helping others become familiar with the word pictures, the Name of God, the titles of God, the attributes of God and the Trinity.

Here are a few practical thoughts on how to do this in your area.

I. The Existence of God

In America and Europe, the most common method(s) of showing God’s existence involve philosophy, morality and ethics. In other parts of the world, where the Church is a persecuted minority, God has used other more biblical things to support and encourage the Church.

When I say more biblical things, I am referring to non-Christian people having dreams and visions. I am also referring to divine healing, miracles and even bringing the dead back to life the same way God did in the Old Testament and the Book of Acts.

If you want to know more, I recommend reading “The Insanity of God” by Nik Ripken.

II. The Name and Titles of God

The titles of God were recorded in Scripture as a result of the “salvation” people in the past experienced when God intervened to provide guidance and course corrections in the lives of his people. This is why I only shared a partial list of His titles.

The most important thing here is for people to realize that 1) God does get involved in our lives, and 2) it is completely normal for these interventions to occur. There is no limit to the number of things God is willing to “save” his people from.

Those of you familiar with the New Testament may wonder about Paul’s thorn in the flesh. I want you to know that God had a plan to “save” Paul from that as well. The reason Paul struggled with it constantly is a conversation we can have later in the New Testament resources section of this website.

III. The Attributes of God

You can share the Bible verses, along with the definitions obtained from theology books while asking God in prayer for opportunities to see the difference they make. For example, you might encourage someone to pray by saying “Show me the difference your independence makes” until they begin to see it for themselves, in their own life.

If you look carefully at the list of attributes, you will notice that God’s love is missing. That was not an accident, I left that one off the list on purpose. My reason for skipping it is pretty simple: The love of God in the Bible is ALL OF THE ATTRIBUTES.

IV. The Trinity

As far as the Trinity goes, I want to remind you we are being invited into a conversation that has taken place for nearly 2000 years. There are a lot of people who have contributed to our understanding of what is (and is not) important.

It may (or may not) be a good idea to try and explore what the Christian teachers and Skeptical thinkers have discussed, debated and doubted. The main thing is to promote the idea, instead of sharing detailed explanations of why this idea has withstood the test of time.

This Is (not) the End…
