The Bible begins by telling us that the universe was created by a spirit commonly called God. When God created men and women, He decided to make them in His image. The Bible tells us this in Genesis, chapter 1 verses 26 through 27, which says this in the English Standard Version of the Bible:

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

As a result of being made in the image of God, we were given the ability to make choices that have real consequences. We could make choices that were not in our own best interest, and the end result was that human nature became broken. The Bible tells us this in Psalm chapter 53, verses 2 and 3 which says this in the English Standard Version:

“God looks down from heaven on the children of man to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all fallen away, together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.”

Before you can become a Christian, you have to hold to these two beliefs regarding human nature: 1) that all men and women were created in the image of God, and 2) something went horribly wrong and God’s original design has been broken.

Everything the Old Testament says has been written to prove these two beliefs to us.
