We believe the God who created the universe is also responsible for the existence of human life. The reason we believe this is because the Bible contains comments like this one:
“Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:26-27 ESV)
Here is a quick overview of Basic Christian Beliefs on this subject.
I. We Are Mankind
In the book of Genesis, God chose the word Mankind to represent men, women and children. In Genesis 5:2 (ESV) we are told “Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created.”
II. The Meaning of Life
God’s reason for creating mankind was to display his own glory. God’s goal is for us to improve His reputation with our day to day lives. We exist to receive the benefits of His goodness, and celebrate the contents of His character.
This is why we are told to “… do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31 (ESV)
III. The Image of God
When God was creating our world, He designed all kinds of plants and animals with instincts they needed to survive. When it came to mankind, God added something to human nature that was not given to any other form of life – the image of God.
There have been a lot of discussion and debates on what it means to bear God’s image, but the basic result is undeniable: we have authority over other forms of life that exist on this planet.
Here is a book I wanted to recommend because it shares insight into our duties image bearers:
