The Bible tells us that men and women have bodies, souls and spirits. Here is an example taken from the Bible: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior…” (Luke 1:46-47 ESV)

I. The Difference Between Soul and Spirit

A careful reading of the Bible will reveal that a human soul and a human spirit have several overlapping traits, which have led some people to believe the soul and the spirit are the same thing. If that were true, then we have to ask why God used two different words to describe them.

II. The Different Words For Soul And Spirit

In the Old Testament writings, the Hebrew words are “nephesh” for the soul and “ruach” for the spirit. In the New Testament writings, the Greek words are “psyche” for the soul and “pneuma” for the spirit.
